Vietnam Expands Visa-Free Travel to 12 More Countries, Introduces Special Waivers

Big news for travellers and professionals: Starting August 15, 2025, Vietnam is opening its doors wider — granting 45-day visa-free entry to citizens from 12 European countries, while also introducing special visa exemptions for select high-value visitors in business, academia, and culture.

Visa-Free Entry for 12 European Countries

From mid-August 2025, citizens of the following countries can visit Vietnam without a visa for up to 45 days:

  1. Belgium
  2. Bulgaria
  3. Croatia
  4. Czech Republic
  5. Hungary
  6. Luxembourg
  7. Netherlands
  8. Poland
  9. Romania
  10. Slovakia
  11. Slovenia
  12. Switzerland

Applies to all passport types
Valid until August 14, 2028

If you’re from Poland, the Czech Republic, or Switzerland, you may already have visa-free access under Resolution No. 11/NQ-CP (January 2025) — but note that this older rule will be replaced by the new policy on August 15, 2025.

Special Visa Waivers for High-Value Visitors

On the same day, Vietnam also issued Decree No. 221/2025/ND-CP, creating a separate visa exemption category for certain individuals whose visit benefits Vietnam’s strategic goals.

Who qualifies?

  1. Invited by Vietnam’s top leaders – The President, Prime Minister, or other senior officials.
  2. Senior foreign officials – From governments or major international organisations.
  3. Experts, scientists, and tech professionals – Including researchers, professors, and specialists in high-tech industries.
  4. Major investors and executives – CEOs, founders, or key investors in global companies.
  5. Internationally recognised cultural figures – Famous artists, athletes, and performers.
  6. Honorary consuls of Vietnam – Even if serving in unpaid roles.
  7. Invitees of top universities or companies – From Vietnamese academic and corporate institutions.

Additionally, the Ministry of Public Security can approve visa-free entry for others considered strategically important, even if they’re outside the predefined categories.

Why This Matters

  • For European tourists: More freedom to travel — no visa paperwork, no fees, more flexibility.
  • For professionals and cultural icons: A direct route into Vietnam without the standard visa process.

These changes are part of Vietnam’s push to boost tourism, attract global talent, and deepen international partnerships.
