Experts Warn Germany’s New Immigration Restrictions Could Backfire
Germany’s new government, led by Chancellor Friedrich Merz, is making a strong push to tighten immigration controls. However, leading experts are raising red flags, warning that overly strict measures could backfire by fueling illegal immigration.
A new report published by the Bonn International Centre for Conflict Studies (BICC), titled the Global Forced Displacement Report, takes a critical stance on the government’s current migration strategy. The report’s authors—Benjamin Etzold, Franck Düvell, and Petra Bendel—highlight several concerns.
Benjamin Etzold argues that Germany’s immigration policies are not aligned with the realities of global displacement and migration. He specifically criticizes Chancellor Merz’s proposal to turn asylum seekers away at the border, calling it ineffective and potentially counterproductive.
“People who are deported often try to return again and again,” Etzold explains. “If legal entry is blocked, many will resort to illegal means—an outcome that plays into the hands of human traffickers.”
Petra Bendel also raised serious legal concerns. According to her, Germany’s policy of refusing asylum seekers entry could violate national and international laws. She stresses that the right to seek asylum is protected under the German Basic Law as well as European legislation.
“We are deeply concerned that turning people away at the border could breach legal obligations,” Bendel warns.
As Germany seeks to reform its immigration system, experts urge the government to strike a balance between control and compassion—ensuring that policies are effective without undermining fundamental rights.
