Germany Plans to Tighten Immigration Rules Once Again
Germany is once again taking a hard stance on immigration under the new government led by Friedrich Merz. Since the administration took office, a series of increasingly strict immigration measures have been announced—and now, another controversial proposal is in the works.
The latest measure targets family reunification rights. Specifically, the government is reportedly planning to abolish the family reunification procedure for individuals with subsidiary protection status.
This change would mean that migrants who do not qualify for full refugee status—but are still granted temporary protection because returning to their home country would put them at risk—will no longer be allowed to bring their immediate family members to Germany.
For many, this could create deep emotional and humanitarian challenges, as families would be forced to live apart despite the difficult circumstances that brought them to Germany in the first place.
The move is expected to spark debate, with critics arguing it undermines basic humanitarian principles, while supporters say it’s necessary to control migration more effectively.
Stay tuned as the proposed changes continue to develop.
