As part of efforts to curb illegal immigration, the UK government has announced that starting from 2029, everyone who wishes to work in the United Kingdom must possess a government-issued digital ID.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who introduced the Digital Identity Card System, stated that this move would make it significantly harder for individuals to enter and work illegally in the UK.
Special Benefits
He also mentioned that this system will offer several exclusive benefits to legitimate residents and workers.
Opposition to the New System
However, opposition parties have argued that digital identity cards alone will not effectively prevent illegal immigration.
In response to this policy, a petition with over 1.6 million signatures has been submitted opposing the new digital ID card system.
The petition insists that no one should be forced to register for a government-issued ID card.
As per the UK’s parliamentary tradition, any petition that receives more than 100,000 signatures must be debated in Parliament.
