On April 24, 2025, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. signed an executive order laying the foundation for the Philippines’ official Digital Nomad Visa program. This move aims to attract remote workers from around the world, offering them the chance to live and work legally in one of Southeast Asia’s most scenic and affordable destinations.
What is the Philippines’ Digital Nomad Visa?
The Digital Nomad Visa allows foreign nationals to live in the Philippines while working remotely for companies or clients located outside the country. With a low cost of living, stunning beaches, and over 7,000 islands to explore, the Philippines is already a popular choice among location-independent professionals.
This new visa further enhances its appeal by providing a legal and structured way for digital nomads to stay for extended periods.
Why the Philippines?
The World Economic Forum recently ranked the Philippines as the 7th fastest-growing remote work hub in the world in 2023. With improved digital infrastructure and a warm, welcoming culture, the country offers an ideal environment for remote work and travel.
According to Tourism Secretary Christina Frasco, this initiative is part of a broader strategy to boost tourism and inject new energy into the local economy. “Digital nomads can provide steady, off-peak visitor flow and bring valuable cultural exchange to our communities,” she said.
Who Can Apply?
To be eligible for the Philippines’ Digital Nomad Visa, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Be at least 18 years old
- Have proof of remote work through digital technologies
- Earn sufficient income from a source outside the Philippines
- Hold valid health insurance
- Have no criminal record
- Be a citizen of a country that:
- Offers digital nomad visas to Filipinos, and
- Maintains a Philippine foreign service post (or apply in the nearest country where such a post exists)
Important Note: Individuals already employed within the Philippines do not qualify for this visa.
Duration and Renewal
Visa holders will be allowed to stay in the country for up to one year, with the possibility of renewing the visa for an additional year. The Department of Foreign Affairs will also maintain a digital database of visa holders for monitoring purposes.
When Can You Apply?
