Switzerland Moves to Tighten Immigration Controls Amid Rising Numbers
The Swiss government has announced new plans to manage immigration more strictly, particularly when migrant numbers exceed certain thresholds. Officials say the move is necessary to maintain control over the country’s resources and social systems.
Speaking on the issue, Beat Jans, Switzerland’s Federal Councillor responsible for migration, emphasized that net migration from the European Union has reached levels that warrant closer regulation.
The government aims to introduce legal measures to cap the number of migrants, especially cross-border workers, unemployed individuals, and those reliant on government assistance. According to Jans, Switzerland must retain the ability to adjust immigration policy in response to economic and social pressures.
This proposed change would allow Swiss authorities to proactively limit immigration when it surpasses sustainable levels, thereby safeguarding employment opportunities, public services, and social welfare systems.
