Thousands of young people buying homes in Portugal

The public guarantee regime, which has been in force for three months, continues to attract thousands of young people seeking financing to purchase their first homes.

With a total limit of €1 billion in state guarantees, this measure allows banks to grant loans worth a total of €6.7 billion.

According to data collected by Jornal de NegóciosSantander has already formalised loans worth €206 million and is analysing requests totalling €635 million. BPI, in turn, has already granted more than €150 million in credit with public guarantee, after receiving more than 3,800 requests. Millennium BCP, according to data released at the end of February, registered 3,250 credit requests worth €600 million. At the time, the bank had already approved or was about to formalise 461 contracts worth €88 million.

Caixa Geral de Depósitos (CGD) contracted 861 loans under this regime, part of a total of 3,376 requests received, equivalent to €623 million. Novo Banco, at the beginning of February, registered 1,100 requests, corresponding to €170 million in real estate credit.
