UK Set to Offer More Work Visas and Easier Rules for Indian Professionals Under Trade Pact

The upcoming UK-India Free Trade Agreement (FTA) promises to transform opportunities for Indian professionals by simplifying visa procedures and easing mobility rules across sectors like technology, research, hospitality, and the creative industries.

Boost for Indian Talent: Easier Visa Access and Annual Quotas

As part of the trade pact, the UK plans to issue 1,800 additional annual work visas for Indian professionals, including musicians, chefs, and yoga instructors. This move is set to enhance cultural exchange and promote India’s creative talents in the UK.

In addition, professionals in technology, management, engineering, and R&D will benefit from relaxed visa norms aimed at encouraging innovation and deeper collaboration between the two nations.

Simplified Business Mobility for Indian Service Providers

The FTA includes significant benefits for Indian service-based businesses and professionals aiming to expand their footprint in the UK. Key highlights include:

  • Streamlined mobility rules for Indian firms and professionals.
  • Improved market access for Indian architects, engineers, IT, telecom, and other service providers.
  • A more transparent and predictable visa system for temporary work placements.

This is a strategic effort by the UK to foster smoother business operations and attract high-skill Indian talent.

Financial Relief Through Social Security Exemptions

One of the most impactful aspects of the agreement is the Double Contributions Convention, which will exempt Indian employees on short-term UK assignments from paying UK social security contributions.

This measure is expected to save Indian professionals and companies up to ₹4,000 crore over the next three years, significantly reducing the cost of overseas assignments.

Strategic Trade-Offs: Visas in Exchange for Tariff Reductions

In exchange for visa concessions, India is offering reduced tariffs on select UK exports, including Scotch whisky and luxury cars. Furthermore, limited access will be granted to UK companies for non-sensitive government procurement projects at the central level.

Importantly, contracts at the state and local levels remain outside the agreement’s scope, preserving India’s strategic autonomy in public procurement.

Additional Visa Adjustments Under Consideration

Apart from the primary visa reforms, the UK has also signaled a willingness to introduce minor visa adjustments, potentially allowing around 100 more Indian professionals annually under specialized categories.

What This Means for Indian Professionals and Businesses

This landmark trade agreement opens promising new avenues for Indian nationals looking to work, create, and innovate in the UK. Key takeaways include:

  • Increased annual visa quotas in tech, creative, and research fields.
  • Lower costs for Indian professionals due to social security exemptions.
  • Easier market access for Indian service companies and startups.
  • A clearer, faster path to work authorization in the UK.

As the deal nears finalization, Indian workers, entrepreneurs, and creatives can expect smoother mobility, fewer regulatory hurdles, and stronger UK-India economic ties.
